The opening game of IPL 2021 went down to the wire with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) completing the chase of 160 on the final delivery of the game. The Virat Kohli-led side's bowling department did a spectacular job to restrict MI to 159. At one stage, MI were looking set for a total beyond 180.
They had their big hitters out in the park. Still, MI only managed 24 runs in the final 4 overs. Harshal Patel shone with the ball and became the first-ever bowler to take a five-for against MI. His scalps included Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya and Marco Jansen.
With the bat, AB de Villiers led from the front and was only dismissed after putting his side on the brink of a win. He scored 48 off 27 before being run-out. With the win, RCB have earned 2 points while MI have continued their streak of losing their first match of the season. Here's a look at the updated points table, Orange Cap and Purple Cap holders -
Since they are the only side to register a win in the tournament, RCB sit at the top spot. They have 2 points in their account and an NRR of +0.050. MI sit at the last spot. The Rohit Sharma-led side had finished IPL 2020 as the top-placed side.
Chris Lynn, who scored 49 off 35, tops the run-scoring charts. Ironically, he isn't a confirmed selection for the 2nd fixture as Quinton de Kock will be out of isolation in the next couple of days and is confirmed to make a comeback into the playing XI. Lynn only got to play his maiden MI game due to de Kock's unavailability. Even if MI somehow play Lynn, he isn't expected to open the innings.
Following Lynn on the list is AB de Villiers, who scored 48 off 27. Glenn Maxwell and Virat Kohli scored 39 and 33 runs, respectively.
Playing his comeback game for RCB, Harshal Patel emerged as the top performer in the fixture and took a five-for. He dismissed 5 batsmen for just 27 runs. He was also on hat-trick in the 20th over but missed out.
Harshal is followed by Jasprit Bumrah and Marco Jansen. They scalped 2 wickets each. Jansen was on his IPL debut.
